Challenges Encountered by ESL Students in The Development of Communicative Competence Skills in Lesotho

This study explored the challenges that undergraduate tertiary students encounter in development of communicative competence skills three selected institutions Lesotho. Adopting qualitative approach, employed a case design for data collection strategies which included face-to-face interviews with lecturers (n=11), focus group discussions (n=100) as well classroom observations (n=2). The findings from revealed traditional methodologies are mostly language classrooms because large do not enhance students’ competence. Furthermore, showed lack motivation to learn English and anxiety caused by fear speak target language. Further noted is exposure due scarcity interactive activities may further render communicatively incompetent. On these premises, thus recommends should be exposed through encourage interaction. Also recommended balance fluency accuracy so improve discourse, linguistic, interactional strategic competencies.
